Every year, a fresh wave of players jumps into San Diego Studio’s flagship baseball sim, and every year, the exact same question pops up on forums and subreddits: "Why does the game suddenly feel impossible?" or "How do I stop the difficulty from changing on its own?"

MLB The Show 26 is an incredible simulation, but out of the box, its default settings can feel a bit erratic if you don't know how to tame them. Whether you are striking out on three straight pitches or blasting ten home runs a game, finding that perfect sweet spot is essential to enjoying your time on the virtual diamond. Thankfully, the game gives you total control over how tough your opponents are—you just need to know where to look. Here is a straightforward guide on how to adjust your difficulty settings and lock them down permanently.

Navigating to the Difficulty Menu

Before you can tweak anything, you need to head to the main options panel. From the main menu of MLB The Show 26, look at the top-right corner of your screen and select the Settings gear icon. From there, head into User Settings, choose General, and then open up the dedicated Difficulty tab. This is your central hub for configuring how the game plays on the field.

How to Adjust Your Difficulty

One of the best things about MLB The Show is that it doesn't force you into a one-size-fits-all difficulty package. If you are an absolute ace on the mound but can't hit a slider to save your life, you can balance those phases independently. By moving your controller stick left or right, you can fine-tune individual gameplay aspects:

  • Gameplay Style: You can choose between Casual, Simulation, or Competitive. If you plan on taking your skills online to play multiplayer against real opponents, it is highly recommended to stick to Competitive. This aligns the gameplay physics and timing windows with standard online matchmaking formats.

  • Hitting Difficulty: This controls your timing and plate coverage indicators when you are at bat. Tiers range all the way from Beginner for those just learning the ropes, up to Legend and the grueling GOAT difficulty for seasoned veterans.

  • Pitching Difficulty: This adjusts your throwing tier separately. If you find the AI offense is destroying your best pitches, you can lower this to keep games competitive without touching your hitting parameters.

  • Fielding Difficulty: A newly added customizer slot allows you to independently tweak the defensive challenge level. If you want realistic throwing meters and punishing error rates, you can crank this up while keeping the rest of your game casual.

Once you have dialed in your preferred settings, simply press B on Xbox or Circle on PlayStation. The game will prompt you to save your changes—make sure to confirm it before backing out.

How to Lock Your Difficulty

If you have manually set your hitting or pitching to "Veteran" or "All-Star" but notice that the game suddenly feels way harder mid-game, you are likely wrestling with the game's Dynamic Difficulty feature. By default, the game implements a system that automatically raises or lowers your difficulty tier based on your real-time performance. Hit three home runs in a row? The game bumps you up a notch. Strike out three times? It scales back.

While this is great for organic growth, it can be incredibly frustrating if you just want consistency. To "lock" your settings permanently at a single fixed difficulty tier, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Dynamic Difficulty slider inside the Difficulty menu.

  2. Toggle Dynamic Difficulty Off.

  3. Move the slider entirely to your preferred static tier (such as Veteran or All-Star).

  4. Save your settings before exiting.

Once turned off, your offline single-player modes will stay permanently locked at your manual choice, allowing you to build muscle memory without the goalposts constantly moving.

Important Settings Exceptions to Keep in Mind

While locking your difficulty works flawlessly for custom franchises and exhibition matches, there are two major exceptions where your manual settings will be overridden:

  • Online Multiplayer: When you step into competitive online modes like Diamond Dynasty, your custom single-player difficulty locks are completely ignored. Online matchmaking automatically scales difficulty (ranging from All-Star all the way up to GOAT) depending on your current competitive tier and Matchmaking Rating (MMR).

  • Moments: These are time-restricted single-player missions designed to recreate specific historical or seasonal milestones. Because they are meant to offer a specific level of challenge, they are locked to predetermined difficulties (usually Rookie or Veteran) chosen by the developers, which cannot be overridden by your user settings.
