Vn88 Rezence News: After the VAR didn't award a penalty against Spurs, PGMOL apologized to Brighton

Brighton & Hove Albion received an apology from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in April 2021 for a mistake made by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the club's Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Brighton Hove Albion received an apology from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in April 2021 for a mistake made by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the club's Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

News from Rezence, Hugo Lloris, the goalkeeper for Tottenham, apologized after VAR decided against giving Brighton a penalty for a foul he made on Danny Welbeck, the striker for Brighton.

The incident took place before halftime, when Brighton held a 1-0 advantage. When Welbeck went after a loose ball, Lloris came rushing out and collided with him, preventing Welbeck from tapping the ball into an empty net. Referee Kevin Friend handed Brighton a penalty kick before consulting the VAR and changing his mind, awarding a free kick to Tottenham because Welbeck had fouled Lloris.

Replays, however, revealed that Lloris fouled Welbeck by making contact with the striker before the latter touched the ball. Vn88 Rezence thought the VAR made an evident mistake when it decided not to award a penalty.

After the game, the PGMOL issued a statement saying, "We recognize that VAR made an error." "The VAR misread the situation due to human error. We really regret any inconvenience this may have caused Brighton Hove Albion or its fans."

Brighton's manager, Graham Potter, expressed his appreciation for the apologies by saying on rezence.com: "I appreciate the PGMOL coming out and offering an apology. That's a sign of modesty, and now we can move on."

The event brought to light once again the debate over using VAR in sports. While the technology was intended to aid referees in making more informed calls, it has been criticized for creating chaos and slowing down play. W88 thinks that several high-profile blunders were made by VAR during the 2020-2021 Premier League season, including the failure to award a penalty to Brighton in this example, and it is unclear what, if any, adjustments will be made to the system in the future to address these issues.

After Saturday's Premier League encounter between Brighton and Tottenham, the PGMOL confirmed that the match officials and VAR made a mistake by not giving Brighton a penalty.

According to W88 Rezence, PGMOL's chief refereeing officer, Howard Webb, met with Brighton to explain his team's calls and offer an apology.

This is the third time this season that PGMOL has apologized to the club for on-field judgments.

With the score knotted at one, Tottenham's midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg appeared to commit a foul on Kaoru Mitoma inside the penalty area, but referee Stuart Attwell first gave Hojbjerg a pass.

W88 said that Stockley Park's video assistant referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the film briefly before resuming play without awarding a penalty.

It was one of three legitimate claims by Brighton, but the tourists were not given any of them.

After both managers, Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Cristian Stellini of Tottenham, were sent out, Tottenham went on to win the match 2-1, keeping them within three points of the top four.

Without a win, Brighton would be in fourth place, but now they are down to seventh, 10 points behind Manchester United in fifth.

PGMOL has been reached out to by Vn88 Sports News for comment.

In the Seagulls' FA Cup fourth-round win over Liverpool, referee David Coote and VAR Neil Swarbrick opted not to send out Fabinho for a harsh challenge on Evan Ferguson, prompting PGMOL to issue its first apology to Brighton this season.

The second occurred when the VAR placed the offside lines in the wrong spot when evaluating a goal scored by Pervis Estupinan in a 1-1 Premier League draw away at Crystal Palace.

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk blasted the officials after their loss at Tottenham, saying with Rezence: "If you're not going to make crucial calls like that, then having VAR in the game is pointless. I don't know how to process the implications of that."

Dunk also questioned the officials' decision to maintain the decision to disallow Mitoma's earlier goal for a debatable handball without also reversing the ruling not to give the Japanese winger what appeared to be a clear penalty "They get to make the handball call but not the others.

That seemed like a close call on the handball call, but the penalty call was a total blur.

Before the final whistle, Stellini confessed that the VAR calls went Spurs' way, saying with Vn88 Rezence: "For the first time this year, we get a break from the video assistant referee. Since we've had a lot of bad luck with VAR, we need to savor this moment. It only happened to us once, though.

"Numerous times, we abided by the referee's judgment. This norm is now universally respected.

"We gave in to their hostility. We toned down our hostility. We kept to ourselves, intent on the game at hand.
